Find meaning or don’t find meaning but “steal” some time and give it freely and exclusively to your own self. Opt for privacy and solitude. That doesn’t make you antisocial or cause you to reject the rest of the world. But you need to breathe. And you need to be.”

In the western imagery of contemporary fashion, Japanese designers have all to differing degrees appeared as impenetrable figures, Yamamoto has the image of a discrete and secretive character, one who talks little but well and always to the point, with clarity and pertinence. The image of a thinker set apart from the crowd and floating above the ground that bears him, coming ever closer to wisdom with advancing age. A concentration of positive values and energies, touched by Zen and market by the grace of Buddhism.

However, closer examination of his words, his passions and the way he lives his life show that the reality is much more complex, not to say entirely the opposite. This is firstly because, like his designs, he is an extreme personality both in his approach and in his behavior, and he does not hesitate to say that ‘without excess it is not possible. […] You can’t just have an absence of color, transparency. That’s not good.’

Excess is first of all a way of life. Yohji Yamamoto loves tobacco (and smokes heavily), alcohol (a source of merriment and confusion: ‘Drinking puts me in a cheerful mood. […] I’m completely transformed when I drink.’, he confesses), women (sources of inspiration) and gambling (a source of forgetfulness and distraction).

He is under no illusions about any of that.
